Splendid stone circles!

Class 3 had a fabulous afternoon using our knowledge of stone circles to build our own Stonehenge from biscuits. We looked at the structure and layout of Stonehenge and used this as a guide for our models. We learnt lots of interesting facts about the stones and completed a fact card to accompany our models. As well as enhancing our knowledge there was lots of problem solving and teamwork displayed.

Movie Night

Last week we had our very first ‘Film Night’ at Levens CE School.  It was brilliant!

We came back to school when it was very dark in our pjs and onesies with our teddies, blankies and pillows to enjoy just one of the fabulous Christmas films on show at Levens Cinema!  During the performances we ate hot dogs and popcorn.  It was such a lovely night and we are already planning next year’s event!

Exploring the World of Square and Cube Numbers

In Class 4, we’ve been embarking on an exciting mathematical journey, delving into the fascinating world of square and cube numbers. We’ve been using multi-link cubes to help us visualize and understand these special numbers.

A square number is a number multiplied by itself. For example, 4 is a square number because it’s 2 multiplied by 2 (2 x 2 = 4). We can represent square numbers visually using our multi-link cubes by arranging them in a square formation.

A cube number is a number multiplied by itself three times. For instance, 8 is a cube number because it’s 2 multiplied by 2 multiplied by 2 (2 x 2 x 2 = 8). We can visualize cube numbers by building 3D cubes with our multi-link cubes.

While square and cube numbers are related, they also have distinct characteristics. Square numbers result in 2D arrays (squares), whereas cube numbers form 3D arrays (cubes). Some very astute pupils also noticed that you can go further and multiply a number by itself four times over (eg. 2x2x2x2=16) but you would need another way of representing this (a fourth dimension!)

By exploring these concepts hands-on with our multi-link cubes, we’ve gained a much deeper understanding of square and cube numbers. We’ve also developed our problem-solving skills and learned to think critically about mathematical patterns.

The Great Fire of London Workshop

On Monday Class 2 enjoyed their imagining history workshop! They went back in time to 1666 and visited Pudding Lane when a Bakery set on fire! They met James the Duke of York and Thomas Farriner and his family. The children enjoyed acting out different parts of the Great Fire of London.

Dallam Dynamites

What a brilliant, brilliant afternoon we all had at Dallam on Wednesday.
A crisp, cold, fresh and beautiful day was experienced as our 31 entrants battled against opposition on a very tough course, to do themselves and their school, justice.
Several medals were won, it is true, but an even better outcome was that all competitors, showed guts and determination, remembering everything they had learned and trained for, leaving nothing ‘in the tank’ on their way to the line. Staff and parents in attendance were in awe of what was achieved. To all runners, thank you for showing your best, onwards and upwards!

Stone Age hunter gatherers.

We learnt all about food in the Stone Age food today by going hunter gathering!  The children had a great time hunting for food and animal information in the community garden. We then learnt what foods were eaten and in what seasons. The children also learnt about changes throughout the Stone Age.

Maths using chocolate!

Class Three started their multiplication and division topic by looking at arrays. We looked at egg boxes and baking trays and then moved on to chocolate! The children drew the array they could see, identified the rows and columns in each array and then recorded the multiplication and division facts. We has a fantastic time while learning all about arrays.

Jesus is the Light of the World.

Class Three enjoyed a fantastic workshop with Diana from NISCU. We identified sources of light and compared these to Jesus such as car headlights lighting the path like Christians believe Jesus guides the way. For each source of light, we examined an extract from The Bible explaining why Jesus is called the ‘Light of the World’. We then each made a lantern with some of the quates on. This was a brilliant start to our topic.

Whole school multi-faith art afternoon

On Tuesday, all pupils from nursery to Y6 enjoyed an immersive afternoon learning about art from the Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic and Jewish faiths.

Keswick Museum and Castlerigg Stone Circle

Class Three had a wonderful day visiting Keswick Museum and Castlerigg Stone Circle. The children loved seeing the stone circle and could recall facts they had learnt during our art topic. We constructed a timeline at the museum identifying key events in history. We then split into groups and all had chance to hold Stone Age axe heads found in a cave on the Pike of Stickle. We were also archaeologists and carried out a dig, we then interpreted the finds to identify the period of history these were from. We also looked at Stone Age artefacts in the museum and had the opportunity to look at the other exhibits. The children really enjoyed the day and had chance to use and extend their knowledge.
