Intent
Our physical education curriculum at Levens is designed to motivate children to participate and succeed in a range of sports, games, exercise and other physically demanding activities. It offers appropriate opportunities for pupils to develop a wide range of physical skills, knowledge and understanding which promotes their health and fitness and encourages them to develop a life-long love for different physical skills, activities and games. Through the curriculum they will have opportunities to compete in sports, games and other character building activities which help to promote values such as determination, resilience, endurance, perseverance, fairness and respect.
Implementation
Physical Development in the Early Years is one of the Prime areas of learning within the EYFS Framework. Children learn to develop strength, balance and co-ordination when playing, move confidently and safely in a variety of ways using a range of equipment. They also develop their fine motor control, learning how to use a range of tools safely and effectively such as cutlery, paintbrushes and tweezers.
In Key Stage One, pupils build on the skills developed within the Reception year. They learn how to master basic movements such as running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination and begin to apply them in a range of activities. We provide opportunities for children to participate in team and competitive games such as multi skills, tag rugby, invasion games, over the net games, hockey, tri golf, striking and fielding games, cricket, co-operative games and athletics. Pupils are taught to apply and develop a broad range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways enabling pupils to develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
In Key Stage Two, pupils will be taught to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. Appropriate physical activities develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance through athletics and gymnastics. Children take part in appropriate outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team. Pupils are encouraged to compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Before they leave our school, they are able to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres using a range of strokes and can perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Impact
At Levens we recognise the link between the physical and mental wellbeing of our pupils and acknowledge the benefits that physical education can have on our pupils’ readiness to learn. Through our physical education curriculum and the expertise of sports coaches and sporting professionals, pupils develop an understanding of how to develop and improve their knowledge, skills and physical understanding by experiencing different physical activities and sports. Children learn how to evaluate, recognise and celebrate their own successes and the successes of others through extra-curricular opportunities including competing against other schools and county competitions. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with and against each other as they exercise their bodies and minds and build and develop their skills.
